Finally Google Play Has Added Books For Users In India

Finally Google Play Has Added Books For Users In

India

NEW DELHI: Google on Thursday started selling books through its Android Play store in India. Google's decision to start selling content in India through the Play store comes nearly three months after Apple, which competes with Google in the smartphone and tablet market, introduced iTunes content store.

However, unlike iTunes store that sells music and films - but not books - in India, Google is selling only books for now. But sources say the company realizes India is an important smartphone and tablet market and going forward it is likely to add more content to the Play store.

"Just under one year ago, we introduced Google Play. Today we're adding books to Google Play for people in India. Books on Google Play now offers thousands of Indian titles, from new releases to classics," a Google official wrote on the company's blog.

"It's easy to find great Indian authors such as Amish Tripathi, Devdutt Pattanaik and APJ Abdul Kalam, plus international bestsellers from the world's largest ebookstore."

While Google's Android operating system powers a majority of smartphones in India the company has been slow to build a content ecosystem on the Play store.

But last year it picked some pace as it added the support for India-specific prices for apps in the Play store and rolled out Navigation service through an app for Android devices and iPhones.

The company has also lagged behind in introducing its Nexus phones and tablets, which are officially supported by Google, in India. So far, only one Nexus device - Nexus S - has been launched here.

Google said that books bought from the Play store will sync across devices with the help of the Play Books app. "With Google Play you can read on the device of your choice. And with your books in the cloud you can read on the web, a phone, or a tablet and pick up right where you left off," the Google official wrote on the blog.

Interestingly, users will be able to purchase books on the Play store through a web browser and read them on a computer. Apple's iTunes doesn't allow users to purchase items through a web browser.

Apple CEO promises investors 'great stuff' to come

Apple CEO promises investors 'great stuff' to come

Apple CEO Tim Cook sought to reassure shareholders worried about the company's sagging stock price that the iPhone and iPad maker is on the verge of inventing more breakthrough products that will prove it hasn't lost its creative edge. "The company is working as hard as ever, and we have some great stuff coming," Cook told shareholders Wednesday before taking their questions during Apple's annual meeting at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.
True to Apple's secretive nature, Cook didn't provide any further product details, although at one point he said the company is considering entering other categories besides its popular line of digital music players, smartphones and tablet computers.

There has been speculation that Apple is working on an Internet-connected watch or TV that will be introduced later this year. One shareholder at Wednesday's meeting threw a new idea for Apple to ponder - a computerized bicycle. Cook, an avid bicyclist, chuckled at the suggestion, along with the rest of the audience.

Although there were more moments of levity, Wednesday's meeting was less celebratory than the events in past years, when Apple's stock price was soaring to the delight and enrichment of its shareholders.

Since hitting an all-time high of $705.07 five months ago, Apple's stock has plunged by 37 percent. The decline has wiped out collective shareholder wealth totaling $240 billion. That amount exceeds the total market value of Microsoft Corp., which reigned as the most influential company in personal computing until Apple ushered in an era of mobile devices with the 2007 release of the iPhone and the 2010 introduction of the iPad.

Cook, who became CEO shortly before Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died in October 2011, has a huge incentive to get the company's stock price strong again. The 1.1 million Apple shares he owns are worth about $300 million less than they were five months ago.

"I don't like it, either," Cook said of the downturn in Apple's stock.

Apple Inc. hasn't unveiled another trailblazing product since Cook took over, raising concerns about whether the company is losing the ingenuity that has set it apart from the rest of the technology pack.

Cook told shareholders the company's commitment to innovation remains Apple's "North Star" and "the beat of its heart."

His pep talk evidently didn't inspire many investors. Apple's stock shed another $4.40 to close Wednesday at $444.57.

Shareholders still affirmed their confidence in Cook at the meeting. Preliminary results showed Cook was re-elected to Apple's eight-member board of directors with 99 percent of the vote.

Wall Street may have been disappointed that Cook didn't provide any further clarity on whether Apple might distribute some of its $137 billion in cash to shareholders in the form of a dividend increase or a special one-time payment.

Apple shareholder David Einhorn, who runs the Greenlight Capital hedge fund, turned Apple's cash hoard into a hot topic in the weeks leading up the meeting. He sued to block a proposal that would have required shareholder approval for Apple to issue preferred stock. Einhorn argued that if approved, it would create a bureaucratic hurdle that could make it more cumbersome to return cash to shareholders. He wants Apple to issue preferred shares called "iPrefs" that would yield an annual dividend of 4 percent.

A potential showdown was averted last week when a federal judge ruled that Apple had improperly bundled several corporate governance issues, including the handling of preferred stock, in the same proposal. Apple withdrew the proposal from Wednesday's agenda, to the chagrin of two shareholders who said they would have voted for it.

Supporters of the measure included the California Public Employee Retirement System, or CalPERS, which urged Cook to do what's best for Apple's long-term interests.

"I would say the message is, `Keep calm and carry on,'" said Anne Simpson, who oversees corporate governance for CalPERS.

Einhorn, whose fund owns 1.3 million Apple shares, didn't appear at Wednesday's meeting.

In response to a question Wednesday, Cook said Einhorn's resistance to a shareholder vote on preferred stock remains "a silly sideshow, regardless of how a judge ruled on it." Cook remarks echoed the derisive description he used during an appearance at an investor conference earlier this month.

Cook also sounded a familiar refrain when he discussed Apple's pile of cash. "This is a serious subject, and one we deliberate on as a board and a management team. We are in very, very active discussions on it," Cook said.

Not long after Cook made similar remarks at last year's annual meeting, Apple announced plans to start paying a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share and to spend $10 billion buying back its stock in the fiscal year that began last October. Even though the dividend commitment costs Apple $10 billion annually, the company now has $39 billion more cash than it did year ago.

The prosperity underscores the ongoing popularity of Apple's products.

Although Apple is selling more gadgets than ever before, the company's profits and sales aren't growing as robustly because of fiercer competition from a multitude of other smartphones and tablet computers, including ones costing less. Apple's biggest headaches have been caused by Android, a mobile operating system that Internet search leader Google Inc. gives away to a long list of device makers led by Samsung Electronics Co.

There are now an estimated 600 million devices running on Android, giving it a lead over Apple.

Cook said Apple remains more interested in the quality of its products than the quantity sold.

"We want to make the best," Cook said. "That's why we are here."

cyber security policy to hit India soon

Cyber Security Policy To Hit India Soon

New Delhi: India will soon have a cyber security policy that will ensure preventive measures against cyber crime and fraud, the government said Wednesday.
India will have cyber security policy soon: Kapil Sibal
"We are working on a cyber security policy... we need more work to curb cyber crimes," Minister for Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal told the Lok Sabha during Question Hour. "It's a new medium. we need to understand it and take preventive measures," he said.
According to the minister, the computer emergency response team in India, CERT-In, was monitoring any suspicious move on the internet in order to checkmate potential cyber attacks from hackers. The minister said that if any instance of fake calls on mobiles or emails promising a big award in exchange of personal information of a user is reported to his ministry, it will take action.

India will soon have a cyber security policy that will ensure preventive measures against cyber crime and fraud.
Sibal stressed the need for international agreements, saying that the intermediaries of various internet service providers were located outside India, making it difficult to seek information from them.
He supported the demand made by Congress MP Jai Prakash Agarwal that more public awareness campaigns must be run on the issue.
Mentioning also the misuse of Section 66-A of the IT Act (pertaining to sending messages on communication services that are false or offensive), the minister said the police were not aware of it.
"We are for freedom of speech but it should not hurt others," Sibal said, mentioning the misuse of social networking sites like Facebook, on which people post offensive text and pictures.

Box office report: Kai Po Che! beats Zila Ghaziabad by a huge margin in the opening weekend

Box office report: Kai Po Che! beats Zila Ghaziabad by a huge margin in the opening weekend

The Sushant Singh Rajput starrer has earned approximately Rs 18.1 crores, while Sanjay Dutt’s action flick has collected only Rs 10 crores

Box office report: Kai Po Che! beats Zila Ghaziabad by a huge margin in the opening weekend
Abhishek Kapoor’s low budget inspirational flick Kai Po Che! gave Anand Kumar’s multi-starrer gangster drama Zila Ghaziabad a tough fight at the ticket counters in the opening weekend. After witnessing a huge opening on Friday, the Sanjay Dutt-Arshad Warsi-Vivek Oberoi starrer hasn’t been able to overtake the earnings of Sushant Singh Rajput-Rajkumar Yadav-Amit Sadh’s real-life tale. As per the box office reports, Kai Po Che! had a flying start at the multiplexes. The opening shows in Mumbai and other metropolitan cities ranged from good to better what with the youth thronging the multiplexes from the morning shows itself.
“The fantastic pre-release promotion by UTV, coupled with the tremendous following of writer Chetan Bhagat amongst youth, ensured impressive footfalls for Kai Po Che! at major centres. But the response in Punjab and UP was not up to the mark. Released in 1,000 screens in India, the business is expected to grow manifold towards the evening-night shows,” pointed out trade expert Taran Adarsh and added, “On the other hand, Zila Ghaziabad opened quite well across single screens of mass belt. Expectedly, the opening was weak at multiplexes, but the single screen audiences, especially in UP, gave the film a head start due to the action genre.”
As far as the box office collections of Kai Po Che! are concerned, “The movie witnessed remarkable growth over the weekend. Fared exceptionally well across all urban centres, especially on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, several cinemas increased shows to accommodate the massive demand. In short, the weekend business was terrific. Breakup: Friday Rs 4.50 crores, Saturday Rs 6.25 crores, Sunday Rs 7.35 crores. Collected approximately Rs 18.10 crores nett in its opening weekend,” tweeted Taran.Zila Ghaziabad, on the other hand, performed better at single screens of mass circuits but got eclipsed by the Kai Po Che! wave across major circuits. Reportedly, it has managed to earn only Rs 10 crores at the box office.
The collections of Kai Po Che! are expected to be better in the days to come and the bad reviews of Zila Ghaziabad offer no hope and it’s quite unlikely that the film will pick up pace. Watch this space for more updates.

Get Ready To Experince 4G

Get Ready To Experince 4G

Airtel will soon start providing 4G-based voice calling services in Pune. Airtel is set to become the first one to offer combined voice and data plans on 4G network.

Bharti Airtel has confirmed it will soon launch voice services on the fourth generation TD-LTE network. Pune will be the first city to get Airtel's 4G voice services and has already hired Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy its Circuit Switched FallBack (CSFB) voice solution in the operator’s live TD-LTE network in the city. With the move, Airtel will be first telecom operator in the country to offer combined voice and data plans on 4G network.

“We have the advantage of a pan-India GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and 3G networks. With the deployment of cutting edge CSFB (Circuit Switched FallBack) functionality, we will have the flexibility of using either or both the networks to support voice services on our TD-LTE (time division long-term evolution) standard platform,” Jagbir Singh, chief technology officer and director of network services group at Bharti Airtel, is quoted as saying.

The CSFB technology allows the operators to transfer customers to the GSM platform to make and receive voice calls and access voicemails using 4G data services.

In the meanwhile, Reliance Industries (RIL) has also revealed its plans to launch 4G services later this year, though it didn't give any particular timeframe. Reliance has pan-India licence and is likely to be a key player in the segment.

Analysts believe Airtel's entry in voice-based 4G services is likely to provide huge boost to the operator, which is right now the only player in the segment.

“It (Bharti) definitely has the first mover advantage. Voice is a big factor in mass adoption. Since voice services have been allowed by the government, RIL can also provide voice services along with their data services and hence can have a better market strategy with bundled services,” says Mritunjay Kapur, country managing director of Protiviti Consulting Pvt. Ltd.

Airtel's announcement comes days after the Telecom Commission allowed the telecom operators to launch 4G voice services if they shelled out an additional $306 million (Rs. 16.5 million approximately). Back in December 2012, the operator had sought permission from the government to test voice services on the fourth-generation networks.

The All New Mozilla OS For Moble's Here

The All New Mozilla OS For Moble's Here

Mozilla, which is a not-for-profit organization, behind the Firefox web browser has announced handsets based on its operating system for mobile phones.
According to Jay Sullivan, vice president of products at Mozilla, Firefox phones are likely to be sold first in the developing world and Eastern Europe and will be at the cheaper end of the smartphone market.
He said manufacturers LG, ZTE, Huawei and TCL had all committed to building devices, with more firms "to follow".
According to the BBC, the platform is based on the HTML5 web programming language which, Sullivan says gave it an advantage over Apple and Android.
Mozilla described the Firefox OS as an "pen alternative," the report added.
Sullivan compared Mozilla's foray into mobile as similar to its first steps in the desktop world with its browser.
The organisation said the first countries to get the Firefox handsets would be Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela, the report added.

SAMSUNG Unveils Galaxy Note 8

SAMSUNG Unveils Galaxy Note 8
BARCELONA: Samsung Electronics is beefing up its tablet range with a competitor to Apple's iPad Mini that sports a pen for writing on the screen.
The Korean company announced on Sunday inBarcelona that the Galaxy Note 8.0 will have an 8-inch screen, putting it very close in size to the Apple's tablet, which launched in November with a 7.9-inch screen. It's not the first time Samsunghas made a tablet that's in the Mini's size range: it's very first iPad competitor had a 7-inch screen, and it still makes a tablet of that size, but without a pen.
Samsung will start selling the new tablet in the April to June period, at an as yet undetermined price. It made the announcement ahead ofMobile World Congress, the wireless industry's annual trade show, which starts Monday in Barcelona, Spain.
The Note 8.0 fills a gap in Samsung's line-up of pen-equipped devices between the Galaxy Note II smartphone, with its 5.5-inch screen, and the Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-size tablet. Samsung has made the pen, or more properly the stylus, one of the tools it uses to chip away at Apple's dominance in both tablets and high-end smartphones. Apple doesn't make any devices that work with styluses, preferring to optimize its interfaces for fingers, mice and touchpads.
On Samsung's Note line, the pens can be used to write, highlight and draw. The screens also sense when the mouse hovers over the screen, providing an equivalent to the hovering mouse cursor on the PC. However, few third-party applications have been modified to take full advantage of the pens.

Kai Po Che Film Review

Film Review Of Kai Po Che!!

You can make a half decent, subtle Dil Chahta Hai-esque film, especially if Farhan Akhtar is your co-writer. So when Rock On happened, debutant director Abhishek Kapoor’s contribution was probably underestimated. Rock On went on to get great reviews.
You can also make a mass-based masala entertainer, if Rajkumar Hirani is co-writing it. So when 3 Idiots happened, novelist Chetan Bhagat’s contribution was probably underestimated too. 3 Idiots became the highest grossing Bollywood film that year.
But to make a film that outclasses and outshines both Rock On and 3 Idiots, without having an Akhtar or a Hirani, without having an Arjun Rampal or an Aamir Khan... Wow! Sheer vindication of talent for director Abhishek Kapoor. And writer Chetan Bhagat who has constantly been the butt of all jokes for the dumbing down of Indian literature.
Even after Kai Po Che, the hubris of Bhagat critics will insist that if the film is as classy and sublime as it is, it’s not BECAUSE of Bhagat but IN SPITE of him. (The film is based on his bestseller The 3 Mistakes of My Life.)
That would be unfair.
While he might not be the greatest writer alive, Bhagat certainly knows middle class India better. He knows to capture and pack many facets of young India into simple characters that truly represent the complex realities of the country.
Kai Po Che reminds us of another mostly fantastic approximation of India — Mani Ratnam’s Bombay, a melting pot of culture and boiling communal tensions. A film that resorted to a Utopian ending after neatly facing off one community against another, through strategic character types in a microcosm of India.
Kai Po Che that’s set in Gujarat, another volatile melting pot (known for both Sabarmati Ashram and Sabarmati Express) does what Bombay does more realistically, minus the Utopia, and goes beyond the type.
Three friends in Kai Po Che, each represent one side of India — the capitalist (Rajkumar Yadav as Govind Patel), the political (Amit Sadh as Omkar Shastri) and the emotional (Sushant Singh Rajput as Ishaan Bhatt).
Govind lives by math, probability and profit, Omi by his loyalties, allegiances and conveniences, while Ishaan is all heart, selfless and easily angered. Yet, they all have echoes of each other and end up shaping each other to do exactly the opposite of who they are, by the time the film winds up.
Abhishek Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat pull this off with refreshing restraint and sublime subtlety and continuously keep us at the edge of the seat with a compelling, unpredictable narrative that’s brewing with the tension and volatility of an India torn between capitalists, politicians and dreamers.
This is us. The real middle class India. Real people, not stars. Real houses, not sets. Real clothes not fancy pants. You’ll fall in love with everything about India. And Gujarat.
Kai Po Che is everything that Rock On and 3 Idiots were, put together — dreams and aspirations, friendship standing test of time, the pursuit of excellence, a commentary of our education system and a coming-of-age film with not a single moment of dishonesty. We haven’t seen stronger characterisation, economy in words, visuals or time, in recent mainstream films.
The three leads are a revelation. Rajkumar Yadav, Amit Sadh and Sushant Singh Rajput are the best things to happen to Hindi cinema in a while — intense performers with an electric presence. Amrita Puri, employed as the compassionate personification of love here, will steal your heart once again, after Aisha.
The screenplay of this flawless film is credited to Pubali Choudhari, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat and the technical team of Anay Goswami’s cinematography, Amit Trivedi’s music and Deepa Bhatia’s editing couldn’t have tuned this ensemble better, visually and aurally.
The true triumph of a film is how it makes you feel, when you leave, when you look back at it and when it refuses to leave you long after you’ve seen it.
Kai Po Che will leave you choked and feeling good. It will leave you bittersweet. And breathless.
Go watch it. Again and again.

Microsoft hacked by same Attackers who Attacked Apple and Facebook

After Facebook And Apple Its Microsoft now

Microsoft has revealed it is the latest high-profile internet company to have its computer system hacked.
Microsoft says it has become the latest major internet company to be targeted by hackers
Microsoft says it has become the latest major internet company to be targeted by hackers

The software giant said it experienced a "security intrusion" similar to those suffered by social media site Facebook and technology company Apple earlier this month.
In a blog posted on its website, Microsoft insisted that there was no evidence of customer data being taken.
It said a small number of computers, including some of its Apple Mac computers – which are reputed to be targeted less by viruses compared to Windows computers.
Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Microsoft's trustworthy computing security team, said: "This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries."
Last week Apple announced it had been hit by malicious software, known as malware, which took advantage of a vulnerability in a Java program used as a plug in for web browsing programs.

A few days earlier Facebook admitted it had been targeted in a similar way through a loophole in Java software created by a mobile developer called Oracle.
Facebook said that the malware infected employee laptops even though they were running up to date antivirus software, and described the attack as "sophisticated"
Describing the attack on Microsoft, Mr Thomlinson said: "As reported by Facebook and Apple, Microsoft can confirm that we also recently experienced a similar security intrusion.
"During our investigation, we found a small number of computers, including some in our Mac business unit, that were infected by malicious software using techniques similar to those documented by other organisations.
"We have no evidence of customer data being affected and our investigation is ongoing."
Like Facebook, Microsoft says it is still investigating how malicious software was planted on what it said were a small number of its computers.
Online messaging service Twitter last month also revealed that hackers may have stolen information about 250,000 of its users. It said it was "not the work of amateurs".
The New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal have all accused China of attacking their computer systems.

Microsoft India to hold AppFest

NEW DELHI: In less than a week from now, thousands of charged up students will get together to develop apps for the Windows platform.

On Feb 26, more than 10,000 students from across the country will gear up to code applications for a whole day at more than 50 hub centres, which are currently holding training sessions for students who wish to brush up their coding skills as they register, a Microsoft statement said.

On the day of the AppFest, the young developers will code under the supervision of Microsoft mentors, trainers and Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs), and submit the app online - an opportunity to make it available on the Windows Store after due diligence.

"On one hand, the trends in the IT space have evolved over the past few years, creating greater opportunities for students and budding developers. On the other, the global youth unemployment rate is currently at 12.7 percent - double the overall unemployment rate," Microsoft director (strategic audience marketing) Pratima Amonkar said.

"These two things clearly indicate a gap in demand and supply - and the obvious answer: Given the right skills and training, there is lot young technology students can achieve today. This is exactly what we are trying to do: bring together the opportunity and those who can utilize it.

"Obviously students recognize the opportunity, going by the enthusiastic response we have received across India so far," Amonkar added.

Microsoft will provide students at each of the hubs with free software such as Visual Studio Express for Windows 8, and with free Windows Store registration codes through Microsoft DreamSpark, the statement said.

"The focus will be on broad-based consumer applications, incorporating education, games, apps for social good etc. In addition to submitting the apps for evaluation for a chance to get on the Microsoft Store, the training and experience received via this program will boost the students' employability, and create a more capable developer ecosystem in the country," the statement added.

Founded in 1975, Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software for personal and business computing. The company offers a wide range of products and services designed to empower people through great software - any time, any place and on any device.

Microsoft Corporation (India) Private Ltd is a subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation, USA. It has had a presence in India since 1990 and currently has offices in nine cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.

Continue Tweeting Even After You Die

Continue Tweeting Even After You Die

LONDON: Ghost writer! A new application will soon allow users to keep posting Twitter updates even from beyond the grave. The app independently uses intricate knowledge of a person's on-line character to create a virtual continuation of their personality after death.

"When your heart stops beating, you'll keep tweeting," says the new application's tagline.

To be launched in March, the app called LivesOn uses Twitter bots powered by algorithms that analyse your online behaviour and learn how you speak, the Guardian reported. It will keep on scouring the internet, favouriting tweets and posting the sort of links you like, creating a personal digital afterlife.

"It divides people on a gut level, before you even get to the philosophical and ethical arguments," said Dave Bedwood, creative partner of Lean Mean Fighting Machine, the London-based ad agency that is developing it.

"It offends some, and delights others. Imagine if people started to see it as a legitimate but small way to live on. Cryogenics costs a fortune; this is free and I'd bet it will work better than a frozen head," Bedwood said.

Mia Smith, a business owner in her mid-40 s, has already registered her interest. For her, it is the chance to have a "kind of ironic legacy" that drew her in. "But I'm not sure who'd be interested in reading a computer-generated 'me'," she said.

The growth of "digital legacies" is already throwing up legal and ethical issues: it's a violation of many websites' terms of service for surviving relatives to go on using your passwords.

Yahoo launches new home page with 'endless' news feed

The new page puts news at the center of the homepage's design and allows for full customization based on interests.

A look at the new Yahoo homepage.

Yahoo has delivered a new homepage design for news fanatics.
Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced the news on her company's blog today, saying that the new design delivers a "more modern experience."
The focal point of the design is news. Users can head to the page and customize what's displayed based on their interests. If they prefer sports or entertainment information, for example, they can choose to see only news items related to those topics in the page's feed.

According to Mayer, the new homepage's news feed has "infinite scroll, letting you experience a virtually endless feed of news articles." Yahoo has also added a social feature allowing users to log in with their Yahoo IDs or Facebook accounts and see articles shared by friends.
"The new Yahoo! experience works well on the go -- we've optimized it for smartphones and tablets," Mayer wrote. "And, thanks to some under-the-hood improvements, Yahoo! is also faster."
In addition to news, Yahoo is still offering its search box at the top of the page for those who want to head elsewhere on the Web. Yahoo's services links sit to the left of the page and a new sidebar called "Trending Now" tells folks what's popular across the Web at that moment. Yahoo homepage users can also modify their weather and stock information.
Yahoo was secretly testing new Web designs last year, but some folks were able to see the improvements as its testing went on. In October, Yahoo added some minor improvements to the homepage, but it appears that was just the precursor to a major overhaul.

Unknown hackers infected the computers of some Apple workers when they visited a website for software developers that had been infected with malicious software. The malware had been designed to attack Mac computers.
The same software, which infected Macs by exploiting a flaw in a version of Oracle Corp’s Java software used as a plug-in on Web browsers, was used to launch attacks against Facebook, which the social network disclosed on Friday.
The malware was also employed in attacks against Mac computers used by “other companies,” Apple said, without elaborating on the scale of the assault.
Twitter, which disclosed that it had been breached February 1 and that hackers might gave accessed some information on about 250,000 users, was hit in the same campaign, according to a person close to the investigation.

Another person briefed on the case said that hundreds of companies, including defense contractors, had been infected with the same malicious software. Though this person said that the malware could have originated from China, there was no proof.
“This is a new campaign. It’s not like the other ones you read about where everyone can tell it’s China,” the first person said.
Investigations into the breaches are ongoing. It was not immediately clear when the attacks had begun, the extent to which the hackers had succeeded in stealing data from targeted systems, or whether all infected machines have been identified.
The malware was distributed at least in part through a site aimed at iPhone developers, which might still be infecting visitors who haven’t disabled Java in their browser, the person close to the case said. There is a version that infects computers running Microsoft Windows as well.
Security firm F-Secure wrote that the attackers might have been trying to get access to the code for apps on smartphones, seeking a way to infect millions of end-users. It urged developers to check their source code for unintended changes.
Apple disclosed the breach as tensions are heating up over US allegations that the Chinese military engages in cyber espionage on US companies.
US cyber security firm Mandiant reported over the weekend that it has uncovered evidence that the Chinese military is behind a slew of cyber attacks on US businesses. The White House said it has repeatedly raised concerns about Chinese cyber theft with Beijing.
The breaches described by Apple mark the highest-profile cyber attacks to date on businesses running Mac computers. Hackers have traditionally focused on attacking machines running the Windows operating system, though they have gradually turned their attention to Apple products over the past couple of years as the company gained market share over Microsoft Corp.
“This is the first really big attack on Macs,” said the source, who declined to be identified because the person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. “Apple has more on its hands than the attack on itself.”
Charlie Miller, a prominent expert on Apple security who is co-author of the Mac Hacker’s Handbook, said the attacks show that criminal hackers are investing more time studying the Mac OS X operating system so they can attack Apple computers.
For example, he noted, hackers recently figured out a fairly sophisticated way to attack Macs by exploiting a flaw in Adobe Systems Inc’s Flash software.
“The only thing that was making it safe before is that nobody bothered to attack it. That goes away if somebody bothers to attack it,” Miller said.

Cyber security attacks have been on the rise. In last week’s State of the Union address, US President Barack Obama issued an executive order seeking better protection of the country’s critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.
White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday that the Obama administration has repeatedly taken up its concerns about Chinese cyber theft with Beijing, including the country’s military. There was no indication as to whether the group described by Mandiant was involved in the attacks described by Apple and Facebook.
An Apple spokesman declined to specify how many companies had been breached in the campaign targeting Macs, saying he could not elaborate further on the statement it provided.
“Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers. The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers,” the statement said.
“We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple,” it continued.
The statement said Apple was working closely with law enforcement to find the culprits, but the spokesman would not elaborate. The Federal Bureau of Investigation declined to comment.
Apple said it plans to release a piece of software on Tuesday that customers can use to identify and repair Macs infected with the malware used in the attacks.

Is Akshay Kumar really bigger than the Khans?

Is Akshay Kumar really bigger than the Khans?

By the Khans we mean of course Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, in that order, and not the Khan who looked like a pervy uncle in Cocktail i.e. Saif Ali Khan. Now, for the last couple of days Akshay Kumar has been trending worldwide on Twitter. On the back of the decent box office legs shown by Akki’s last release Special 26, his rabid fans (yes, apparently he has a few) have taken to the micro-blogging site in droves and made this hashtag #Akshay2000crore extremely popular.

The fans’ contention is that if you add the nett box office collections of all of Akki’s 105 released films, including Special 26, it totals Rupees 2,000 crore. And what’s more, this figure is apparently higher than the total box office takings of each of the Khans (no, not you, Mrs Kareena). Such an exercise is patently ridiculous. First, it does not specify whether these so-called collections are for India or worldwide, because if it were, then Shahrukh would be on top of the pile given his tremendous clout at the overseas box office. Moreover, those calculating have conveniently forgotten that reliable Indian box office numbers are notoriously difficult to come by.

But Akki is not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. He also took to Twitter and blurted thus: “Honestly blessed to have you all Akkians in my life. Special thanks to my fan clubs who support me so much selflessly time & again. Thank you for the #Akshay2000crore tag only possible coz of you all.” It is no surprise that Akki likes his numbers, for, if you loosely translate the title of his very first movie Saugandh (not counting Aaj where he had a bit part as a karate instructor), it is ‘A Hundred Stinks’. My blushes.

Just for the record, the collections of just one film of the biggest Khan of them all, Irrfan, stands at Rupees 3,129 crore to date. The film is of course, Life of Pi.

Now that that the serious business is out of the way, let us train our sights on the annual Media and Entertainment (M&E) conference that’s held in Mumbai every March, FICCI Frames. The 14th edition of the jamboree kicks off on March 12 in the venerable presence of Karan Johar. The student of last year said: “The M&E industry has the potential to become the catalyst for social change and a force of good for every niche of society. FICCI Frames has been the most eminent platform for the M&E sector and its initiatives over the past decade have improved the quality of content generation, skill development and stature of the industry. We believe that our new agenda will be the change agent for social and commercial development, connecting a billion people, while shaping and informing their opinions and getting influenced by their collective needs in turn.” Whatever.

More importantly, Bollywood will be out in force at Frames. In a panel titled Gatecrashers who made the party: The Out of Towners in Bollywood, Kahaani director Sujoy Ghosh, Ek Tha Tiger director Kabir Khan, Gangs of Wasseypur star Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Karan’s protégé Sidharth Malhotra will discuss how they made it despite not having any godfathers in the industry. That begs the question, why is Siddharth on the panel when he had Karan as his overlord.

In another panel Kamal Haasan and Rahul Bose will speak about freedom of expression. After the Vishwaroopam experience they may have a few choice words to say. And, a panel comprising Karan, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee will celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema. A master class titled Engaging A Diasporic Audience should be a barrel of laughs because Gurinder Chadha who has consistently failed to address a diasporic audience is going to conduct it. It’s A Wonderful Afterlife anyone?

Microsoft’s Outlook.com out of preview stage with 60 mn users in less than six months

Microsoft’s Outlook.com out of preview stage with 60 mn users in less than six months

Microsoft has announced on its blog that Outlook.com, its new e-mail service, which will replace Hotmail.com, is now out of the preview stage and is open to the public.

The service was first introduced last July and is Microsoft’s answer to rival Google’s popular Gmail service.

Microsoft, which acquired Hotmail in 1997, also said that it won’t force users to change their emails to an “outlook.com” address.

According to CNET, Senior Director of Product Management Dharmesh Mehta said existing Hotmail users can switch over at anytime. You’ll be able to keep using your “@Hotmail” address and you’ll have the option to claim an “@Outlook.com” alias, as well.

The company says they have gained over 60 million users in less than six months of the launch.

Some key features of the service are:

• Cloud sync: Outlook is cloud friendly and promises that all your email will be available wherever you are. Its linked to your calendar as well. The good thing is that it comes with SkyDrive, so for users sending photos and documents, size is no longer a problem. SkyDrive will ensure that attachment worries are a thing of the past.

• New interface: Microsoft has gone for a cleaner interface It also promises users that 30 percent more messages will be visible in your Inbox than other services. Yes, it’s one long scroll down in Outlook.com

• Social networks: Outlook.com is touted as the first email service connected to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, and soon, Skype. Recent status updates, Tweets, the ability to chat and video calls are all promised.

• Apps: Microsoft is also offering free Office Web Apps such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote which means you can edit the doc from your inbox.

Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan rivalry: A new level altogether?

Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan rivalry: A new level altogether?

Rumours, reports, and rubbish. When it comes to the two quintessential whales of the Hindi film industry – read: Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan – one doesn’t really know how much is too much. There have been many instances in the past where the two have taken digs at each other; sometimes directly, and obliquely at others. This time, it seems that Salman Khan has resorted to veiled methods of taking pot shots at his competitor – rival, maybe – Shah Rukh Khan.

When it comes to the release of a film, Salman had openly stated a while back that he is averse to the idea of promoting a film the way it is done these days. The ‘Dabangg’ star was quoted as saying, “Today you have to keep aside a month and a half for promotions because producers tie up with so many brands,” and is not really happy doing the same.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan’s film-promoting skills are not exactly anything that people don’t know. SRK is known to go to every length and breadth of the film promoting spectrum, and before the release of a film, King Khan leaves no stone unturned in cashing in on as much as his producers would want him to.

However, Salman’s comments on the way a film is promoted these days leaves little scope of imagination as to how different his and SRK’s ways are. And for all we know, this might just be another of Salman’s veiled attacks at Shah Rukh!

How was Facebook hacked?

How was Facebook hacked?

On Friday, Facebook announced in a blogpost that it was the victim of a sophisticated hack attack last month which affected the computers of some employees. However, the company assured users that the attack was quickly discovered and that no user data was compromised or stolen from its servers.

The blogpost said that the attack took place when some employees visited the website of a mobile developer which had been infected.
The post reads,

This website in turn allowed and hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops. The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software. As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day.

AFP Facebook has called in the FBI to investigate the attack on its servers.

So how did the attackers gain access to the laptops of Facebook employees?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in this file photo. AFP
According to an interview in Ars Technica, Facebook Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan said, that “The attack was injected into the site’s HTML, so any engineer who visited the site and had Java enabled in their browser would have been affected, regardless of how patched their machine was.”

Facebook’s blogpost also pointed out that the company had flagged a suspicious domain in our corporate DNS logs and tracked it back to an employee laptop.

The attackers used a “zero-day” (previously unseen) exploit to bypass the Java sandbox (built-in protections) to install the malware. The malware was also able to install itself on both Apple and Windows machines, states the report in Ars Technica. Facebook also reported the bug to Oracle, and they provided a patch for the same on 1 February, 2013.

Facebook also pointed out that they were not the only ones who were attacked. As the Ars report points out, Facebook discovered traffic coming from several other companies and it also notified those companies of the attack and the report also points out that the attack took place in the same period as the attack on Twitter.

Earlier in this month, Twitter too had claimed that over 250,000 accounts were affected in the attack, although it did not specify any details or methodology of how the attack was orchestrated.

The attack on Facebook raises a lot of privacy fears for users, especially as the site has over a billion users, each with their personal photos, data, etc. As this post on TechCrunch points out, Facebook has a lot more to lose from getting hacked.

One also can’t forget that the hacker exploited Oracle’s Java to launch the attack. Security experts have already warned that Java isn’t secure and that users should disable the software on their web-browsers.

Directed by court, DoT moves to block 73 URLs critical of IIPM

Directed by court, DoT moves to block 73 URLs critical of IIPM

NEW DELHI: Ordered by a Gwalior district court, the government on Thursday asked internet service providers (ISPs) to a block 78 URLs or web addresses, of which 73 were linked to articles and blogs about the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) and its director, Arindam Chaudhuri.

Directed by court, DoT moves to block 73 URLs critical of IIPM
Group coordinator on cyber laws and director general of CERT-In (Computer Emergency Response Team-India) Gulshan Rai confirmed the development and said that the move followed the court directive. "From what I know, this is a case between two private parties in the district court of Gwalior. We are only complying with the order," Rai told TOI over the phone but declined to discuss the issue any further.

The telecom department order was silent on the reasons for blocking the URLs, possibly because this wasn't its decision but a court directive. The department asked ISPs not to "mention the name of the URL in the compliance letter". Although the DoT order was issued on Thursday, ISPs took their time complying with it.

Remarkably, the list of 73 URLs includes a public notice of July 2012 issued by the University Grants Commission saying that "IIPM is not a university within the meaning of section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956". It also includes articles published by The Times of India and The Economic Times and other newspapers and magazines.

The IIPM spokesman or Arindam Chaudhuri could not be reached for comment.

"A poor law has given IIPM the ammunition to use state machinery to go after its critics. This was entirely expected given the way the law is drafted. The next step in this ladder would be booking people for blasphemy," said Nitin Pai, founder of think tank Takshashila Institution, who has been tracking the developments around the IT Act.

Cyber lawyer Pavan Duggal explained that the Group Coordinator on cyber law can ask ISPs to block URLs "in national interest" or on court orders under section 69 A of the Information Technology Act. The section allows decryption of information "if the Controller is satisfied that it is necessary or expedient so to do in the interest of the sovereignty or integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order or for preventing incitement to the commission of any cognizable offence, for reasons to be recorded in writing, by order, direct any agency of the Government to intercept any information transmitted through any computer resource."

Samsung Galaxy S IV won’t have S-Pen

Samsung Galaxy S IV won’t have S-Pen

The latest rumour around the Samsung Galaxy S IV comes from the Korean DDaily. The report states that Samsung’s upcoming flagship device will not have an S-Pen and the home button with other touch keys will still be on the phone.

The report quotes industry sources, and adds that while the smartphone will have a “Non-contact Gesture” feature, this detail may have been misunderstood for the “S-Pen Feature” in the device. The report also adds that production has begun for the smartphone.

Other reported features of the device, part of codenamed Project J, include a 4.99 inch Super AMOLED Full HD Resolution Display screen with 441 pixels per inch (ppi). The device is also likely to come with a Exynos 5 Octa (8-Core) CPU, Mali-T658 (8-Core) GPU for Graphics. Samsung showed Exynos processor at CES this year.

The smartphone could also come with Wireless charging. According to reports in Korean newspaper DDaily, Samsung will be selling a wireless charging pad and a dock with the S IV. Currently Nokia’s Lumia devices are the only ones that offer the option of wireless charging.

But it seems Samsung won’t just be launching one phone on 15 March ( the rumoured date for the launch). According to SamMobile, Project J includes a Samsung Galaxy S IV mini and a device that could be a smart watch.

The report on SamMobile reads, The Project J line by Samsung is based on 3 devices where just 2 are confirmed and one still needs to get decided! The other 2 devices by Samsung is the Project J Mini which uses the codename Serrano. The Poject J mini Serrano simple hints to the Galaxy S IV mini. This device uses almost the same accessories as the Galaxy S IV only this device can’t use the wireless charing dock. The third device could be Samsung’s answer on Apple’s rumoured iWatch.

The Galaxy S IV is slated for a mid-March release and could be available to India fans by April.

YouTube files lawsuit against Russian watchdog

YouTube files lawsuit against Russian watchdog

YouTube has filed a lawsuit against Russian consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor over a controversial Russian content-restricting law, its parent company Google said.
The law on protection of children from harmful information that came into force in 2012 authorises regulators to block access to data deemed "harmful to the health and development" of children through promotion of suicide, porn and drugs.
Critics claim the law might be used as an Internet censorship means, but Russian authorities dismiss the claims.
The lawsuit filed in a Moscow court is against Rospotrebnadzor's decision to block access to a "video lesson on how to cut veins".
"In this case, we have appealed the decision of the Russian consumer watchdog because we do not believe that the goal of the law was to limit access to videos that are clearly intended to entertain viewers," the Wall Street Journal quoted Google as saying in a statement.
YouTube was briefly put on a blacklist of websites with harmful content in November 2012.
Media and communications watchdog Roskomnadzor said the website had "suicide promotion" materials.
